Takeaway

When starting this class, I had no concept of how much light affects a photograph. I hadn’t even ever messed with the setting on my camera on my phone. Going into this class I didn’t know what to expect or if I was going to be any good at it, but I don’t regret taking this class at all. As the semester went on, I became more comfortable with taking photographs, using the light to my advantage, and learned to manipulate it to suit my photographs. I also became more confident in my compositions and angles, and was excited to explore unconventional settings and see how far I could push the boundaries in terms of photo taking. My favorite moments were when I would come up with a weird or blurry photograph or catch an orb or glare from a light, I imagined them having so much potential. I know we weren’t able to edit our photographs in any way, but I already have plans to keep my photos and mess with them after the class and see what I can come up with in terms of drawing on them and editing hidden things in them. Especially on the blurry ones. I think I really came out of my shell in our last project, looking through all the projects I’ve done I can see how unsure I was in the compositions of the first project versus being able to go out and pick new compositions for my last one. I picked a place that was very nostalgic to me, and it gave me a sense of peace in this quarantine. Overall my view on photo taking has changed dramatically, I enjoyed it and I think that I will continue to take photographs in the future. My perception of light and shadows and how important it is to photo taking has changed the most, and I can’t wait to look outside and say, “oh it’s blue hour!,” long after this class.

  1. It is nice to see how much you've learned about taking photographs this semester coming in with very little background. It is also wonderful you became more comfortable taking pictures and might pursue it more in the future as a form of artistic expression. I to enjoyed learning to manipulate the effects of natural and artificial light this semester. I also really enjoyed purposely creating blurry photographs. I felt they afford really different emotions and thoughts, rather than the usual "oh that is a picture of....". Too funny the terminology like blue hour will also be something in the back of your mind!

    1. Thank you so much!! I'm very glad I was able to take so much from this class that I can use in my future photo taking endeavors. And yes blurry photographs are my favorite and I can't wait to manipulate them further and create art pieces with them! I love your interpretation on the blurry photographs, I never thought about them in that way before. I enjoyed being your partner throughout this semester and your input helped me become more confident too! And yes HAHA I will never forget about it!

  2. I completely agree and I understand how you feel! This class was a fun learning experience and it's great to come up with create ways to interpret what we learned in photography and using is as a way to express our art. I love how much variety you give in your photos and can see a great use with your lightings. I love the ways your photos came out!
