My takeaway from this class is a deeper appreciation for the art of photography. I knew it was technical, but now I can understand the mechanics a little more behind photography. I choose these images because I felt I learned the most doing these projects: follow the sun, direction, scale the key, and aesthetics and control. I think that I learned more about light while studying photography than any other of my art classes! This surprised me a lot, but now I realize that photography is about capturing light and how it is reflecting and interacting with its subject matter. I particularly enjoyed the Follow the Sun project the most because of the freedom of subject matter and direction. I learned most about how to capture light at different times of the day because of aesthetics and control. Scale the key showed me a lot about how to capture subject matter using different settings and understanding the choice to either hold the camera or not. For some of the shots in Follow the Sun, I decided to hold the camera, mostly for up-close detail shots in brighter sunlight. When it came to harder to capture light, I used the tripod and had to use a higher aperture and slower shutter speed. I will be using everything that I learned about light and how it interacts with the subject matter in my other art disciplines. Artificial light as I learned in the Follow the Sun project can interact in an interesting way with natural light. The artificial light can make the natural light look cooler or warmer deepening the color of it. The temperature of the artificial light can affect the color of the natural light as well. I think this is good to understand when capturing subject matter and using artificial light in conjunction with natural light.
Lindsey I have to agree with you on what your take away from this class was. It was so great to be your partner this semester and to watch your photographs grow in so many ways. I also agree with what helped changed your photography the most because I feel the exact same way. All of your images have turned out beautiful and I wish you the best!
