Knowledge I have Gained
My perspective of light this semester was immensely influenced by the power of shadows. It was fascinating to learn how to manipulate artificial light in ways it suits a composition. It was also fascinating learning to manipulate artificial light to mimic natural light. There are many interesting artistic theories about the shadow as well. Many of these theories consist of ideas that the shadow affords all the rejected characteristics of an object. Many also claim that the light is racing the dark but the light always finds the dark waiting for it. I am inclined to agree with ideas like these because they inform us of conceptual ideas of light and dark. I discovered those conceptual ideas of light can speak volumes when used to enhance the subject. Shadows consist of line, shape, and value that are great descriptive elements of art. I was also intrigued by the relationship an object and its shadow shares, in some cases they very well compliment each other. The following photos are photos with descriptive shadows and complimentary shadows, as well as a few photos from behind the scenes this semester. I decided to include a few random photos I took in the studio this semester because the process of learning and creating is most powerful in comparison to the products themselves. As I stated above manipulating the artificial light and chasing the natural light, along with the informal ideas of light, dark and shadows heavily influence the photos I took this semester as well as the photos I took in light of my own artistic interests! I see light and shadows remaining a part of my artistic expression for quite some time to follow.
Hi Cayton
ReplyDeleteI like your “Light and Shadows” images and similar as you, I also enjoyed learning about using the artificial light and the importance of the positioning and how it all effects in the display of shadows. It is fascinating being able to move the lights around and the way the forms alternate. Artificial light allows you to pick and chose which way you want to project it in your pictures and go from broad to short or hard to defused light characteristics. So unlike in the natural sun light, because in those cases you have to be out chasing the sun and the shadows during specific times of the day. Your compositions and the shadow forms are really nice. I think you did a great job with light temperatures, and I also like how you go from hard to soft shadows in some of your pictures. In your, I believe Aesthetics and Control project, I enjoyed the way some of your pictures look almost overexposed and the bones appear nearly translucent. Looking through all of the pictures, I think your compositions and the contrast between the dark and the light, demonstrates your understanding and how to use the artificial lights in various positions to achieve interesting arrangement of forms. Your images indicate that you have learned a lot about the use of light and the way to manipulate it to express your idea. Great job and keep shooting.
I did really enjoy working in the studio with the lights! The controls on them were so high tech! I really enjoy getting my hands on new tools and materials just to have the experience using them no matter how often I will use them! This class definitely made me appreciate photography a lot more than I have previously!
DeleteI really like how you included images of your learning process included with your final images. I do agree that the comparison between the product and process is interesting to see how the learning process was for you and the exploration you went through. I love how you really captured shadows in your images, it really showed you were looking at how the light and dark were interacting as opposed to only looking at your subject matter. All of these images show a developed sense of composition and understanding of light and dark. I can tell you were thought about where the light sources were coming from in your images and took time to capture the light you wanted to in your images. The photographs show a thoughtful process of learning, and how you choose the best composition that highlights the light and mood you were trying to achieve. Good job and good luck in your future endeavors.
